Anita Brookner's debut novel was published in 1981 by Jonathan Cape in the UK, and as Debut in the US (Simon & Schuster) the same year, when she was 53 years old. Her fourth novel, Hotel du Lac, won the Booker-McConnel Prize in 1984.

No scuffs, marks or losses to either boards or jacket save minor sunning to top flaps. Small corresonding bump to the top left of the spine, and foxing to top edge of the page block. Internally bright, fresh, and clean.

Publisher's illustrated jacket by Dagmar Frinta. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners, with a little sunning to the tops of the boards. Unclipped jacket toned on the reverse with a few small tears, some foxing to text block. Loosely inserted compliament slip signed Toni Evans, from the Linden Press.
